There comes a moment in every parent's day when they seek an activity that is not just a way to "pass the time," but a tool to restore calm. Pouring activities, a cornerstone of Montessori pedagogy, serve precisely this purpose: they help concentration, develop fine motor skills, and soothe restlessness.
Today, let's discover a special variation: sensory pouring with coarse salt and lavender. An experience that combines touch, hearing, and aromatherapy in a natural and safe play.
Why is coarse salt the ideal material?
Besides being an ingredient we all have in our pantry, coarse salt offers unique advantages for sensory play:
-
Natural antibacterial: It is a naturally hygienic material, perfect for repeated handling.
-
Sound experience: The sound of salt falling into a metal bowl is clear and musical, much more vivid and relaxing than that of rice.
-
Safety and skin: Salt does not irritate healthy skin. The only precaution is to check that the child does not have small scratches, as in that case, contact could cause a slight burning sensation.
The Recipe: Calming Lavender Salt
You will need:
-
500g of Coarse Salt.
-
3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (pure and high quality).
-
Dried lavender flowers (if you have the plant at home, you can pick them and let them dry: they will add a magical and very fragrant touch).
-
1 drop of Food Coloring (optional).
-
A jar with a lid.
Instructions:
Pour the salt into the jar and add the lavender drops, dried flowers, and the optional drop of food coloring. Let the salt rest on a tray for about an hour before starting the game.
What happens if you add food coloring? (Technical Note)
It's important to know that the color rendition on salt is different from that on rice:
-
No absorption: Salt is an impermeable crystal. The color remains exclusively on the outer surface of each grain.
-
No vinegar: In this case, vinegar does not help to fix the color and would only risk dissolving the crystals, making them sticky.
-
Drying: Precisely because the color "rests" on the outside, the salt must be very dry so as not to stain hands.
How to present the activity
Arrange the bowl with your Lavender Salt and containers of different materials (metal, ceramic, wood) on a tray. The child will be attracted by the scent of the flowers and the sound of the crystals. You will see how the repetition of the gesture will quickly lead to a state of profound serenity.
